Anderton Barge Lift, Northwich

In 1964, British Pathe visited the Anderton Barge Lift at Northwich in Cheshire.

According to the narrator, the canals were making a comeback, thanks to the increasing levels of traffic on the roads. He even suggests the amount of trade transported by barge may increase.

Here we see George Beech working the mechanisms to lift a barge 50 feet up to the next waterway level. At the time, he was repeating this process five or six times a day.
