Chirton in Northumberland was a village which had coal mining nearby from about 1755. Chirton Colliery was photographed for a postcard in 1904.

Over time the village disappeared, as it was incorporated into the urban spread of North Shields.

Nearby settlements included the village of Percy Main and the hamlet of New York. These settlements have also been absorbed, but the areas still retain their original names today.
