Goody’s Yard Auction 1956

In 1956, Goodey’s Yard at Twyford was the setting of an unusual auction. 600 lots, from derelict cars to traction engines, horse drawn vehicles, a penny farthing and even an anchor were up for grabs.

The merry-go-round, shown in working order with two serious children ‘enjoying’ the ride, sold for £150, quite a sum in 1956.

An Irish quarry was to make use of the £70 mechanical crane. Meanwhile, the horse drawn carriage was destined for Marilyn Monroe’s feature film “The Sleeping Prince” – renamed as The Prince and the Showgirl when it was released the following year.
