Glimpse history through old images of Maida Vale, London, part of the City of Westminster.
Wounded Soldiers 1916
1916 was a particularly deadly year for soldiers serving in the 1914-18 Great War (later known as World War I).
In Maida Vale, some of the injured soliders recouperating in London were entertained at an outdoors event.
A small film clip shows them watching the event. In the first 7 years this video was on YouTube, it got just 60 views.
The clip is only a few seconds long, but here are the faces of some of the men who knew the horror of the trenches.

Giant Crane 1962
In 1962, the world’s highest travelling crane was brought in for the construction of three blocks of flats.
The newsreel includes footage from the crane itself, giving a great view of some of Maida Vale’s nearby streets. You’ll notice how quiet the roads were!

Maida Vale Drive 1968
This 35mm colour footage of the rear view of a drive through Maida Vale in 1968 is silent, but with high quality images.
You see familiar streets and buildings, red telephone boxes, old fashioned cars and vans, and women wearing the miniskirts and high boots highly fashionable in 1968.
