Clovelly’s First Car in 1920

Silent, black and white footage records the first known car drive through Clovelly.

The streets are full of people intrigued by this event, which isn’t great given the speed with which the car drives through roads only just wider than its own width.

The suspension is amusing – the car’s occupants bounce up and down!

Clovelly in 1948

A black and white newsreel starts with a slow pan across the landscape and buildings from different angles.

We see an elderly man delivering milk in pails carried on a yoke.

Donkeys are used to collect fire ash, items from the boats, and barrels, while a sledge moves grocery provisions.

There are no tourists or day trippers in sight.

From the seashore through to the tourist-clogged cobbled alleyways.

The village has changed beyond all recognition from 1948. The houses look freshly painted and the streets are now dominated by visitors.

Sledges and donkeys help goods get to the shops and cafes.
