From 1836, Whitewell House was home to Whitwell Colliery.

The colliery closed in 1875, and locals moved elsewhere for work. In 1894, the village was described as ‘lmost deserted’.

Today the hamlet of Whitwell Grange is all that is left of this site of industrial history.
