Glimpse history through old images of Coulsdon, a town once in the historic county of Surrey but now within the London Borough of Croydon in the south of Greater London.

Fifteen years after the end of World War II, the cameras came to this ‘depressing’ countryside location to see the manual construction of a telescope by Frederick Hargreaves in an underground tunnel.
It would take up to 18 months to make a large telescope.
