Northamptonshire is in the region called the East Midlands, though many people mistakenly think it is in the West Midlands.
Northamptonshire was famous for its leather and shoe industry, and Earls Barton’s Divine Footwear range inspired the musical and film, ‘Kinky Boots’, but today the county is better known for Silverston, home of the British Grand Prix and Mercedes’ engine manufacturing plant.

The county of Northamptonshire has not had a city since 1965, when county boundaries changed and Peterborough became part of Cambridgeshire. The largest town in Northamptonshire is Northampton, which expanded rapidly after its 1965 designation as a New Town, but it is not a city.
