1933: Einstein
In 1933, famous German scientist Albert Einstein visited several American universities, including a third two-month visiting professorship at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
He was accompanied by his second wife Elsa, who was also his cousin. Two years later Elsa was diagnosed with heart and kidney problems, and died in December 1936.
In this footage from March 1933, they are leaving Pasadena by train. They were travelling back to their home in Berlin, which had been repeatedly raided by the German authorities while they were away.
En route to Germany, the German Reichstag passed the Enabling Act and other laws, taking away Einstein’s ability to teach in German Universities. The Einsteins never got to Berlin, and needed help from the Academic Assistance Council to escape Germany, leaing everything behind them. By this time Einstein’s books were being publicly burned in Germany.
After years in Europe, Einstein returned to the US in 1935. He became an American citizen in 1940, settling into his career at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
